Why do my new KEEN shoes smell like vanilla?
We’re on a detox journey to minimize our impact on the planet. Out of the six classes of the most toxic chemicals in consumer products, we’ve eliminated five, and we’re working on the last one: solvents.
This means rethinking the way shoes are usually made — like fusing parts of the sole together without any toxic glues and solvents. Instead, our KEEN.FUSION construction uses high temperatures to create a longer-lasting bond. We are happy that it has a lighter impact on the planet, but we noticed that this process caused a burnt rubber smell. We added a non-toxic vanilla fragrance, because we think vanilla smells better than burnt rubber.
We know many folks have a personal preference and sensitivity when it comes to scents. If it’s a bit strong for you, we suggest putting the shoes outside on a back porch or balcony for a short period of time.
How can I tell if a KEEN boot or shoe is waterproof?
All of our waterproof products feature a KEEN.DRY waterproof membrane that lets vapor escape while keeping moisture out. These boots and shoes have a KEEN.DRY tag on the outside (usually near the ankle or heel).
Why do my KEEN shoes have a rubber smell?
The smell is from a primer used during production. It is non-toxic and perfectly safe, but if the rubber smell isn’t going away and bothers you, some fans have shared they have masked the smell with various non-toxic odor eliminators or fragrances. Please be aware that spraying or adding fragrance to shoes could cause discoloration or staining. Many of our sandals can also be machine washed, check the product page to confirm.
Can you explain the Japan/CM sizing vs centimeter sizing when looking at the KEEN size chart?
CM is the size used in Japan. To measure your foot, you should measure in centimeters and refer to the heel-to-toe size in centimeters and cross reference your size for your region.

Where is KEEN footwear made?
Many KEEN shoes are built in one of our own KEEN factories in Kentucky, Dominican Republic, or Thailand. We’re one of the few remaining global shoe manufacturers that own their factories. Not only does it bring us closer to our responsible manufacturing processes and the people who ensure the KEEN level of quality and craftsmanship, it also makes it easier to quickly pivot our operations to help in a crisis when needed.
We also partner with factories in Cambodia, Vietnam, India, and Bangladesh, working closely with our suppliers to ensure our products are Consciously Created and made to last.
Are KEEN shoes made in the USA?
Even though lots of folks told us that we couldn’t build shoes in America, we’re celebrating 10 years of proving them wrong — in one of the most modern shoe factories in the world.
Our American Built products are assembled with pride in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, using the finest materials sourced from around the world. We’re proud to bring footwear manufacturing back to the USA, and to do it all in one of America’s most modern factories, where our focus on quality and craftsmanship is magnified.
How old is KEEN?
KEEN has been making original hybrid footwear since 2003, when we designed our very first shoe, the Newport sandal. It’s still our #1 bestseller.
